This was a very successful activity and can be applied to any discipline in science. Of course any time you have food, students are engaged! I created a spreadsheet for the invidual students to enter their data. When I realized that to have them copy all the data was too time consuming and frustrating for many I directed them to just record the totals and percents at the bottom so they could go ahead and respond to the activity questions.

That's a good idea for saving time when recording class data, however I did notice that even though it took a long time to compile the class data, all the students were patient enough to collect every group's numbers. During the "long process" students realized that everyone's data was needed and the procedures for collecting the data was important. Putting time into taking in the data as a class put more meaning into the importance of collecting data which then led to the importance of analyzing the data. That process then led the importance of students properly answering the activity questions. In the end, students seem to take the lesson's goals more seriously. Just another "aha moment."
