Earth Day 2005 at UH Mānoa (PDF)

Aloha!

The University of Hawaii Manoa will be commemorating the 35th anniversary of Earth Day on Friday, April 22, in our Sustainability Courtyard, and we would like to invite you to join us!

Our theme this year is “Malama `Aina,” which honors the traditional Hawaiian practice of caring for and sustaining the physical and cultural environment. As you will see from the attached flyer, the event will feature Earth-friendly food and products, local entertainment, and a multitude of hands-on activities throughout the day, highlighted by a series of action-oriented “teach-in” sessions in our 44’ Earth Dome. More than a thousand students, faculty and staff members attended our last celebration last year, and with three times as many booths this year, we expect a much bigger crowd!

In the spirit of malama `aina, we plan to educate about and advocate for protecting Hawaii’s natural and cultural resources. Although we live in a beautiful and remote oasis in the middle of the Pacific, we are not immune to some of the serious issues looming in the world. Most of our energy comes from imported oil, the price of which reached a record high of $60 per barrel recently. As the planet’s population approaches 7 billion, and China and India consume an increasing share of global resources, competition will intensify and prices will continue to rise. Our wisest strategy for economic security is to move toward providing for ourselves, much as the early Hawaiians did centuries before western contact, so we will continue to be nurtured regardless of what happens to resources worldwide.

Our goal for this Earth Day is to communicate clearly the choices our community faces, and offer on-the-spot opportunities to create the self-sufficient economy that is not only desirable and possible for Hawaii, but an absolute necessity, if we are to maintain a stable society in the decades ahead.

Please consider joining us for Earth Day in the Sustainability Courtyard! For more event details, see the attached flyer (PDF). If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help before or on Earth Day, contact us as soon as possible.

Mahalo nui loa!
