- We are building more student housing/improving residence life for students: We have announced the selection of five development teams that will submit proposals for the On-Campus Student Housing project. The submitted proposals will be evaluated by the university, and one developer will be recommended to the UH Board of Regents for approval in April 2005. The developers have formed teams with well-established construction, architectural, financial and other firms from Hawai‘i and the mainland. - We’ve established an Office Native Hawaiian Academic Services within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to work closely with various units in undergraduate and graduate education to improve our recruitment, retention of undergraduate and graduate students of Native Hawaiian descent. - The Chancellor’s Office assisted the Office of the Gender Equity Counselor in posting UH policies and procedures on sexual harassment on their webpage. In addition, during the 2004 calendar year, the office held 27 workshops on sexual harassment prevention were presented to the campus community by a variety of sponsors. Additionally, 28 workshops addressing sexual assault prevention, 6 workshops addressing sexual orientation discrimination prevention, 17 general prejudice reduction workshops and 12 addressing student’s rights and responsibilities were presented. - As an outgrowth of the 2002 Strategic Planning Event, we have had a number of campus cleanup days. We now have an Office of Sustainability, that has fixed up the energy house and spearheaded a number of projects that make this campus a better place, including the Kuykendall courtyard - which was transformed by the UHM Office of Sustainability from a concrete, bland landscape to a gathering spot with plants, gardens, tables, benches and aesthetically-pleasing signs (and organic food choices). New plans include a charter on sustainability, the addition of a venue for events, and improved landscaping. - The University of Hawai‘i and its project partners have received an award of $2.5 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to advance the development of a new open source financial management system for colleges and universities.
