Public Health Journalism Fellowship 2019-20: A collaboration with Public Health, Communication, and Journalism

UHM Office of Public Health Studies and the School of Communications announce the Public Health Journalism Student Fellowship Program, a competitive program by application for current undergraduate and graduate students from any major at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to serve as a Public Health Journalism Undergraduate/ Graduate Fellow.

Term of Service: Fall 2019 or Spring 2020
Deadline for Application: April 15, 2019
Notification by May 1, 2019

WHAT DO I DO AS A FELLOW?

Develop strong communication, teamwork, and professional skills
Each month lead first draft of 1 public health story and provide assistance to related media product for 1 story
Stories can include press releases, alumni profiles, and other communications products (fact sheet, research profile, alumni book, etc.)
Contributions can include writing stories, interviewing, and creating media products such as photos, videos, podcasts, infographics, and others

WHY BE A PUBLIC HEALTH JOURNALISM FELLOW?

Byline and authorship recognition
Mentorship from the OPHS Communications Chair, staff writer, and OPHS Communications Subcommittee
One-on-one training for developing skills, knowledge, and values of the public health and journalism professions
Networking opportunities in public health as stories are written and published
Designated office space in the Office of Public Health Studies
Optional credit under PH 499 699; COM 495B 495C 499 699; JOUR 485 499

HOW CAN I APPLY?

1. Resume
2. Cover letter indicating why you want to be a fellow and any relevant experiences or skills
