BACKGROUND In March 2004 in response to a continuing spate of burglaries on the Manoa campus, the Manoa Faculty Senate passed a resolution (http://www.hawaii.edu/umfs/documents/resolutions.html) urging the Chancellor's office to address the growing security problems of the campus. Simultaneously, a number of concerns involving disturbances in the student residences brought greater public scrutiny to campus security issues. The Manoa Chancellor convened an Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Security with the charge to "identify critical security issues and problems and to advise the Chancellor on remedies that could be considered both in the short term as well as the long term." The committee report was delayed due to unavoidable circumstances. As the report was being finalized, public attention once more turned to the campus in Spring 2005 as a result of sexual assaults in the immediate vicinity of the campus. The scope of issues was further broadened when the Manoa Faculty Senate passed a resolution on Traffic and Pedestrian Safety at their April 2005 meeting. Safety and security have become a primary topic of discussion within the Manoa community. The report of the Ad Hoc Committee is now available at this website. The Ad Hoc Committee has been succeeded by a Security Advisory Committee which is mandated with prioritizing the implementation of the remedies proposed by the Ad Hoc Committee. This work has begun. Those who have comments on the report or questions/suggestions about implementations of its recommendations may contact Thomas Schroeder (tas@hawaii.edu). As the implementation proceeds, new materials will appear at this site. FINAL REPORT: Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Security (pdf) |
