The University of Hawaiʻi is joining educational institutions and officials across the country in celebrating International Education Week, November 15-19. The joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education will be celebrated at UH campuses around Oʻahu with food, entertainment, guest speakers and more.

Events at UH Mānoa, UH West Oʻahu, Honolulu Community College and Kapiʻolani Community College are planned throughout the week, with special events on Wednesday, Nov. 17, which is recognized as International Education Day.

At UH Mānoa, a recruitment fair is already underway and will run through Friday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Campus Center. Sponsored by the UH System International Exchange Program, "Go Exchange!!," the fair offers information on exchange opportunities and the chance to meet and talk with international exchange students currently here on exchange from partner universities, and UH students who have participated in the exchange program by going abroad to partner universities.

At UH West Oʻahu, a fair will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the campus courtyard and lanai. There will be exhibits and representatives from international education programs such as the Fulbright Association, Peace Corps, UH Mānoa Study Abroad, Leeward Community College, as well as food, cultural displays and music. Admission to the UH West Oʻahu International Education Day celebration is free.

Honolulu CC is celebrating with two events planned for the week. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, a special performance by Jammarek will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the mall between Buildings 2 and 7. A well-known traditional and contemporary West African drum ensemble, "Jammarek" means "peace only" in Wolof, the national language of Senegal. The ensemble plays for world peace and the joy of bringing people together through music and dance. After the performance, a drum circle will be on hand to interact with participants and to give them an opportunity to do some drumming.

Honolulu CC will also hold a multicultural workshop on Friday, Nov. 19, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Building 2, Room 201. The workshop‘s purpose is to foster an increase in the participants‘ level of cultural competence when working with persons from Japanese or Caucasian descent. The workshop is presented by Dr. Michael D‘Andrea, professor in the UH Mānoa College of Education and president of the Hawaiʻi Counseling and Development Association.

Kapiʻolani CC has a full week of activities planned in celebration of International Education Week. In addition to daily guest speakers visiting classes to discuss topics such as "Bulgaria: Hidden Jewel," "The New Afghanistan," and "Sun Yat-Sen in Hawaiʻi," a Travel Expo will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the ʻOhia Cafeteria. Kapiʻolani CC members of the International Café will set up travel booths to provide travel tips to Japan, Korea, Colombia, Mexico, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Bulgaria, France and other countries. Included will be information about studying abroad and passport application materials.

On Friday, Nov. 19, there will be an International Café Open House and Language Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and various demonstrations throughout the day including "Kendo Traditional Japanese Martial Arts," a Japanese tea ceremony, and "Vietnam Today & Pho." The demonstrations will take place every half hour beginning at 11 a.m. in Iliahi 129. For more information about the events at Kapiʻolani CC, contact Carl Hefner at 734-9715.
