Shidler alumnus establishes accounting scholarship for local public high school graduates

Shidler alumnus Manuel “Manny” August Jr. has established a $35,000 endowed scholarship for full-time undergraduate or graduate students pursuing an accounting degree at the UH Shidler College of Business School of Accountancy. The scholarship will also receive $5,000 from Wells Fargo Bank as a matching contribution for Fall 2017.
“I believe a strong financial education for our children is key to the future success of Hawai‘i,” says August. “I am excited to establish this endowment for students of the Shidler College of Business to help them achieve the education needed to succeed.” Scholarship recipients must be graduates of public high schools in Hawai‘i, and demonstrate community service and leadership qualities.
August, who graduated from Castle High in windward Oʻahu, is an area sales manager for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. He is responsible for the sales team in Hawai‘i and sales offices in Corona, California. Before entering the mortgage industry, he was a senior accountant in the Audit and Consulting Services Division with KHM LLP, previously known as Arthur Andersen LLP.
He is active in the community, volunteering with charitable organizations that include Habitat for Humanity, Family Programs Hawaiʻi, American Heart Association, Special Olympics Hawaiʻi and the Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi. He serves on the School of Accountancy Advisory Board, Hawaiʻi Academy of Science Board and the Ho‘okāko‘o Corporation Board.
August received his BBA degree in accounting from the Shidler College of Business in 1998, and was previously a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in Hawai‘i.
