UH Manoa named to 2017 elite list of nation's top public universities

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is ranked 107 out of 499 four-year public universities in the U.S., according to a national report that was issued this morning. The study by the Business First publication rates higher-education institutions across the country, based on 22 indicators of academic excellence, affordability, diversity and economic strength.
“This is an affirmation of UH Mānoa’s standing among the nation’s top public universities and colleges offering the best educational experiences to their students,” said Michael Bruno, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and vice chancellor for research. “It is significant that the rankings were limited to public schools, because it is well-known that our home campuses offer residents the least expensive path toward a college degree and its accompanying brighter economic future.”
The report provides a separate breakdown for Hawaiʻi’s public colleges, with UH Mānoa ranking first among the three state institutions included in the rankings.
Business First recognizes schools “with highly selective admissions processes, strong retention and graduation rates, impressive earnings by alumni, generous resources, affordable tuitions and housing costs, diverse faculties and student bodies, and economically robust communities.” The Buffalo-based publication is owned by American City Business Journals Inc., the nation’s largest publisher of local business news and information headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Its study is based on a wide array of the latest data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Nearly three-quarters of America’s college students attend public universities, according to 2016 estimates from the NCES.
