Arthur Lynn Andrews Distinguished Visiting Professor of Asian Studies Guoxiang Peng will present the Arthur Lynn Andrews Chair Seminar, "Confucian Self-Cultivation: Therapy for Body and Spirit," on Thursday, April 29, at 5 p.m. in the Business Administration Building, Room C101.

An associate professor with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences‘ Institute of Philosophy, Peng is also the executive editor of the "Journal of the History of Chinese Philosophy," editor of "East Asian Scholarship," and is a member of the Board of Editors of "New Philosophy" in Beijing.

The Andrews Chair was established by Harriet Cousens Andrews to promote Asian and Pacific studies at UH through the selection of outstanding visiting professors each year. Since 1984, the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies (SHAPS) has overseen the selection and placement of the Andrews Professor. The Chair rotates among the 10 programs and centers within SHAPS. Each visiting Andrews Professor is expected to contribute to scholarship and instruction in areas not specifically addressed in the regular research and curriculum activities of the school.

The Chair's name honors Arthur Lynn Andrews (1871-1945), who became first dean of the UH College of Arts and Sciences in 1920. He was dean of faculties from 1930 to 1936, when he retired, and a member of the UH Board of Regents from 1941 to 1943.
