The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus will host its first "Take Back the Night" event with a series of activities to be held Monday, April 5 though Wednesday, April 7.

"Take Back the Night" is an international rally and march that is organized in local communities with the purpose of unifying men, women, and children in an awareness of violence against women, children and families. The event is a collaboration of community and campus organizations and other interested individuals who are ready to take a stand against violence.

The schedule for "Take Back the Night" is as follows:

Monday, April 5
11 a.m. — Launch rally at the Campus Center Courtyard
6:30 p.m. — Free self-defense class in Campus Center 308

Tuesday, April 6
6:30 p.m. — "Unspeakable Acts," a free play in the Art Auditorium

Wednesday, April 7
12:30 p.m. & 1:30 p.m. — Sexual assault symposium in Queen Liliʻuokalani Student Services Center 412
5:30 p.m. — Vendor fair at the Hale Aloha Courtyard
7 p.m. — "Take Back the Night" March to begin at the Hale Aloha Courtyard

The event is co-sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi (ASUH) and the Student, Equity, Excellence & Diversity (SEED) office. Community organizations such as, the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, Sisters Offering Support, Planned Parenthood, and the Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women are also involved in the event.

"Take Back the Night" rallies and marches began in England as a protest against the fear that women encountered walking the streets at night. The first "Take Back the Night" in the United States occurred in San Francisco in 1978.
