The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) presents its 16th Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. The event, with a theme this year of "Gaining Ground: Past Accomplishments, Future Promise," is a celebration of the excellence and outstanding achievements of CTAHR students, staff, faculty and alumni.

"This year‘s theme builds on the stories featured in CTAHR‘s 2003 Impact Report, which illustrate the great gains made in expanding our student enrollment and finding new sources of extramural funding for research, education, and outreach," said CTAHR Dean Andrew Hashimoto. "CTAHR‘s ongoing commitment to nurture business opportunities, care for the island‘s rich resources, and promote the health and well being of Hawaiʻi‘s people through its research and education, demonstrate the college‘s investment to gain new knowledge and share its benefits."

Special presentations during the event will include the inaugural Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award to U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye. The Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award was developed to honor an individual who has made a significant contribution to the furtherance of CTAHR‘s goals. Also receiving a special presentation that evening will be Inouye‘s wife, Maggie, who will be presented with a special anthurium developed by CTAHR researchers that has been named in her honor.

The event also serves as the venue for the presentation of CTAHR‘s annual Outstanding Alumnus Award, a distinction given to an outstanding alumnus who has made important contributions to a field or discipline represented by CTAHR. The 2004 Outstanding Alumnus Award will be presented to Dr. Robert Birch of the University of Queensland.
