Final Candidates Announced for Position of Hawaii Community College Chancellor

The final candidates in the search to fill the position of chancellor for Hawai'i Community College (Hawai'i CC) have been determined. The chancellor will serve as chief executive officer for Hawai'i CC and is responsible for the overall administration and management of the college‘s instructional support, student services, institutional support, and academic support as well as continuing education programs, training programs, and vocational training programs. The chancellor will also serve as liaison officer to the president of the university and the president‘s staff, the Board of Regents, and the state legislature.

"I‘d like to recognize Chair Shirley Daniel and all the members of the selection committee for their dedication and commitment to moving this process forward swiftly and bringing these three highly qualified candidates before the university community," said UH President Evan Dobelle. The final candidates are:

David J. Mathieu, Ed. D. Dr. David J. Mathieu is currently vice president for academic and student affairs at Normandale Community College in Minnesota. With 30 years experience in higher education, Mathieu has held leadership positions at universities in South Dakota, Montana, California, and Minnesota. He also helped found a campus in Akita, Japan for the Minnesota State University system. Mathieu holds a bachelor‘s degree in American Indian studies and a master‘s degree in American studies from the University of Minnesota. His doctorate in higher education administration is from the University of South Dakota, and he has expertise in bilingual/multicultural education and educational leadership.

Rockne C. Freitas, Ed. D. Dr. Rockne C. Freitas is currently vice president and executive director of the Ke Aliʻi Pauahi Foundation. He has held leadership positions at Kamehameha Schools, the University of Hawaiʻi, and GRG Enterprises, Inc. and served as a trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. He holds a bachelor‘s degree in animal science from Oregon State University as well as a master‘s degree and doctorate degree in education from the University of Hawaiʻi. His doctoral research focused on developmental systems and guidelines for drug prevention, education, monitoring and counseling for intercollegiate athletics. Prior to his academic career, Freitas was a player and coach in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is an inductee in the Hawaiʻi Sports Hall of Fame and the Oregon State University Sports Hall of Fame.

Gary L. Isham, Ph. D. Dr. Gary L. Isham is currently chief executive officer of New Mexico State University at Grants Campus. He has held leadership positions at Central Oregon Community College, Mohave Community College, and Spokane Falls Community College. He holds a bachelor‘s degree in physics and mathematics from Whittier College, a master‘s degree in metallurgy and physics from the University of Utah, a master‘s degree in applied math from the University of New Zealand, a master‘s degree in mathematics and physics from Western Washington University, a master‘s degree in physics and chemistry from South Dakota Technology, and a Ph.D. in science education and higher education from the University of Washington. His early academic research interests focused on wave theory and his doctorial research involved computer modeling of the relationship of cognitive style and mode of feedback in learning theory.
