Dr. Julie Johnson, new dean of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, will formally be inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, in San Diego, Calif. The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) is an organization of distinguished leaders in nursing who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the profession and to health care.

The induction banquet will be held as part of the Academy‘s 30th Anniversary Meeting and Conference, "Aging Across the Lifespan — Living Well Into Your 90‘s." The theme is particularly appropriate as Johnson provides advanced practice in gerontological nursing and rural health.

Johnson is an experienced clinical nurse specialist, scholar, administrator, and researcher. She conducts research on self-care activities and health promotion in rural older adults. Johnson was nominated by her colleagues from Nevada where she served as director of the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno prior to her appointment to UH Mānoa.

Academy fellows are recognized nationally and internationally as nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research. Johnson will now be one of six Fellows in Hawaiʻi out of the nearly 1,400 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. The UH Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene will honor Johnson at a reception on December 8, 2003.
