Fourth International Symposium on Asia-Pacific Architecture

Sensible Design and Smart Practice is the title of the upcoming Fourth International Symposium on Asia-Pacific Architecture that will be held at the University of Hawaiʻi School of Architecture April 5-7, 2001. The symposium's theme is "Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Design Practice: New Paradigms for a Changing Global Economy." This is the only architectural conference of its kind that brings together professionals and academics in a continuing series of conferences held in the Asia-Pacific region.

UH School of Architecture Dean Raymond Yeh founded the conference in 1995 as a forum for dialogue and as a place to network and share ideas about the future of the profession. The three-day symposium is expected to attract several hundred architects, scholars, planners, government agencies and business leaders who are concerned about the quality of the built environment in the Asia-Pacific region.

Participants will explore how architects can improve buildings, cities and the living environment and also propose new ways of approaching international collaborations in the Asia-Pacific region. The symposium will consist of three sessions that focus on the conference sub themes: "Changing Markets in the Global Economy, "Local Design Culture and International Design Collaboration" and "Technology, Nature and Cities."

The symposium will feature an exciting international panel of more than 40 speakers, including acclaimed Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, winner of the 2000 Kenneth F. Brown Asia-Pacific Culture and Architecture Design Award, engineer Alfred Yee, who pioneered the use of pre-cast concrete in construction and internationally renowned Malaysian architect, Ken Yeang, who is known for incorporating bio-climatic principles in ecological building design. Architect and writer Chris Abel and Los Angeles-based architect and planner Ki Suh Park will also speak.

The co-chairs of this year's symposium are Professors Peter Anderson, Jin-Ho Park and Jack Sidener. The University of Hawaiʻi School of Architecture is organizing the biennial event. Co-sponsors include; the American Institute of Architects International Practice Committee, the Asia-Pacific Center for Architecture, the East-West Center, the Hawaii Council of the American Institute of Architects, the Honolulu Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Design Futures Council.

Early registration, including meals and banquet is $300.00 The deadline for early registration is March 1, 2001. Standard registration postmarked after March 1, 2001 is $350.00
