Dr. Herbert Yu recently joined the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center as Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Program and Associate Director for Cancer Control and Population Sciences. He brings to the Center nearly 30 years of experience in cancer research.

Dr. Yu’s research interest in host-environment interactions as a cause of cancer will nicely complement the program’s longstanding research focus on genetics, lifestyles, behaviors and ethnic diversity related to cancer risk. He stated, “I’m pleased to join the cancer center and collaborate with a group of brilliant investigators who have had stellar careers in cancer research. It’s exciting to be working with them, and I look forward to making important contributions to the overall success of the Cancer Center.”

Before joining the Cancer Center, Dr. Yu had been a professor with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University School of Public Health and School of Medicine. His research focuses ongene-environment interactions in carcinogenesis, molecular changes in tumor progression, and epigenetic alterations in relation to cancer risk and patient survival.

He received his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University in China, and then went on to receive his master of science in epidemiology and doctorate in clinical biochemistry from the University of Toronto in Canada.
