Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Blood Drive

January 20,2003 marks the 15th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and also commemorates the 140th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863). The University of Hawaii at Manoa is one of the co-sponsors of the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Week, along with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition-Hawaii, the City and County of Honolulu, Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, American Savings Bank, HGEA, AFL-CIO, and the Federal EECO. There are three events that involve the university community in particular:

1) The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2003 Parade and Blood Driveon Monday, January 20, 2003. The parade begins at 9:00 a.m. at Magic Island in Ala Moana Beach Park and ends at Kapiolani Park around 11:00 a.m. At Kapiolani Park, there will be a blood drive, unity rally, food booths, entertainment and ethnic displays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

2) UH Manoa On-Campus Blood Drive on Tuesday, January 21, 2003. The Blood Mobile will be located in front of the QLCSS building on Varney Circle from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

3) UH Manoa Campus Care Clean-up on Saturday, January 25, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are asked to show up in front of Kuykendall Hall at 9:00 a.m.

We are particularly in need of blood donors at both blood drives. Everyday in our community, hundreds of Hawaii's patients count on a healthy blood supply for their survival. Yet, the statistics are startling. Nearly 60 percent of us will need blood sometime in our life, but only 2 percent of us donate. Let's help change that statistic.
