The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center in Honokaʻa, in collaboration with the UH Hilo History Department, invites the public to two student symposia in April.

History Now at NHERC! features history talks on Monday, April 25 and Friday, April 29 at 5 p.m. in the NHERC Conference Room. Hawaiian history topics will be addressed on April 25, while the presentations on April 29 will be in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Both evenings will include talks from award-winning students. Kamalei Stovall and Robert Franklin took top awards at the recent National History Honor Society Conference in Honolulu.

Students selected to present from the Senior Thesis in History class have all specialized in Hawaiian history at UH Hilo. They will address topics that range from issues surrounding the ‘āina (land), language and politics, to the fundamental lessons found in Hawaiian mo‘olelo (history, literature), ‘oli (chant), and mele (compositions). The class is taught by Dr. Kerri Inglis, associate professor of history.

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, UH Hilo offered a senior-level writing intensive history class on the war taught by Assistant Professor of History Jeffrey Smith. The class examined the war from numerous viewpoints by focusing on specific topics such as Abraham Lincoln, emancipation, women soldiers, Confederate States of America, and why men fought in the Civil War. A selection of research projects will be presented.
