“Producing Culture” is the second program in the series . . . aia i ka wai . . . [Dialogues on [the Present & Future of] Hawaiian Music presented on Friday, February 4 at UH Mānoa’s Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies.
 
“Producing Culture” is the second program, which explores the conditions required to support excellence in Hawaiian music and dance performance. As the music industry transforms, artists must seek new ways to sustain creative activity. What new solutions can presenters and educators imagine?
 
The distinguished group of panelists includes Manu Boyd (Royal Hawaiian Center), Keala Chock (MELE Program, Honolulu Community College), Ku‘uipo Kumukahi (Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts), Michael Pili Pang (Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau), Cody Pueo Pata (Halau Hula o Ka Mahina Mahilani), and Jordan Sramek (The Rose Ensemble). The Dialogue will be moderated by series convenor Amy Ku‘uleialoha Stillman.
 
Program
5:00 p.m. Musical performance by Kaiholu, first place winner of Ka Himeni ‘Ana 2009. It is artists like Kaiholu who are having to forge their path amidst music industry transformations.
 
6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Dialogue panel discussion
 
Parking is available on Dole Street or in the parking garage adjacent to the center.
 
Admission is free. Light refreshments will be provided.
