The UH Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene held a groundbreaking ceremony this morning to launch construction of the UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center (UH THSSC). The new $7.5 millioncenter will be established in the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, and will serve as a campus hub for interdisciplinary translational health science research, simulation and research education.

Among those in attendance were legislators, UH administrators and major health-care employers – including The Queen’s Medical Center, Hawai‘i Pacific Health, HMSA Foundation and Kaiser Hawai‘i – that have provided gifts to develop the center.

The UH THSSC will be a state-of-the-art facility for clinical simulation for students, educators, practicing health-care providers and researchers.

“This is truly an exciting event because this center will help transform the way Hawai‘i’s health providers are trained by linking research to bedside care, providing education in state-of-the art facilities, and sharing this technology with the entire State of Hawai‘i,” said UH Mānoa Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw.

Added Dean Mary Boland of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, “With the strong commitment of the University and support from our health-care partners and the community, research-driven and evidence-based practice innovations will flow to practice settings to serve the people of Hawai‘i.”

Targeted for completion in Fall 2011, the entire 8,500-square-foot floor will be constructed with labs for family assessment, intensive care physiology, acute physiology, community technology, stress/biofeedback, exercise and telehealth, interdisciplinary group areas, interview data acquisition rooms and offices.
