A team of student computer programmers from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo won the Hawai‘i site competition for the Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest. It was the fourth straight year that a UH Hilo team has won the statewide competition, which was held on Nov. 13 at Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i on O‘ahu.

In addition to winning the site competition, the team of Jahrain Jackson, Joshua Loving and Chris Usher also placed 17th out of 77 teams in the Pacific Northwest Region, the best finish to date for a team from UH Hilo.

Two other UH Hilo teams also competed. Tyler Yoshiyama, Joel Cook and Toby Horner placed third in the site competition with excellent time on the first problem, while the team of Marissa Loving, Aja Cornella and Asael Temple was also successful in solving the first problem this year. All the teams were coached by Dr. Michael Peterson and Dr. Keith Edwards.

“Congratulations to all these students who did so well in representing UH Hilo,” said Edwards, chair of UH Hilo’s computer science department.
