The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Center for Global Education and Exchange (CGEE) recently selected five UH Hilo students to take part in an educational cultural exchange with Japan’s Nanzan University.

Sara Hayashi, Valerie Dionne, Arlenny Chugen, Robert Craddock Jr., and Robert R. Franklin departed on October 15 with Assistant Professor of Linguistics Dr. Scott Saft for their ten-day excursion to Nagoya, Japan.

“The students were provided with international airfare as well as accommodations, which included a home stay,” said Carolina Lam, director, CGEE. “Each student was initially paired with a Nanzan University student to collaboratively produce a joint, bi-cultural project.”

The partnership between Nanzan University and the CGEE provides Japanese national students with the opportunity to personally interact with different cultures, and is meant to give students a chance to practice their English communication abilities to deepen their global perspective. The Good Practice (GP) program is supported by the Mombukagakusho (Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
