The University of Hawaii at Mānoa’s Student Housing Services held a blessing ceremony today to dedicate the newly renovated Hale Aloha Complex modernization project.  The complex is comprised of four 13-story buildings, home to 1,080 students. Each of the towers is named for the flower of the four largest islands in the state: Lehua (Big Island), ‘Ilima (O‘ahu), Mokihana (Kaua‘i) and Lokelani (Maui).

Renovations include the first floor, top floor community spaces and all bathrooms. Specific improvements include increased privacy in the community bathrooms, card access to student rooms and building entrance, new windows and new fire alarm and suppression systems.

“The completion of our renovated student housing project improves students’ living and learning environment at UH Mānoa and enhances our goal of serving as a destination of choice,” said Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw.

The cost of the entire two-phase project, including design and construction, is estimated to be just under $25 million.

By Fall 2010, half of the available student bed spaces on campus will reside in facilities that have been significantly renovated or built within the last three years.
