The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents (BOR) held their monthly meeting today on Lānaʻi at the Lānaʻi Senior Citizens Center. The following recommendations were approved:

Contract for Services between UH and the UH Foundation: The BOR authorized the administration to execute an Agreement of Services with the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation effective October 1, 2002, through December 31, 2007. The agreement will enable the Foundation to plan, implement, and support a five-year fundraising campaign to raise between $200-$250 million for the benefit of the University of Hawaiʻi, focusing its efforts on the priorities established by the University. In addition, the Agreement will enable the Foundation to plan, implement, and support alumni relations and athletics services for the benefit of the University.

Relating to Academic Certificates and Degrees: The BOR approved a change in status for the Master of Arts degree in Hawaiian Language and Literature from provisional to established in the Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikolani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. UH Hilo has the most developed effort in indigenous language revitalization in the United States and has become a national model for successful language revitalization. This MA program is the only one in the United States focusing on a Native American language.

Reorganization of the UH Mānoa College of Education‘s Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies: The BOR approved the proposed reorganization of the College of Education, separating the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies into the Department of Curriculum Studies and the Institute for Teacher Education and creating a new Outreach Programs Office. The Department of Curriculum Studies will be responsible for the curriculum studies master‘s degree program and the curriculum studies specialization of the doctoral program. The Institute for Teacher Education will spearhead the teacher preparation aspect and foster communication and collaboration among the various groups involved in teacher education. The Office of Outreach Programs is established to respond to the demand for teacher preparation and advanced professional development programs for all of the neighbor islands.

Site Selection for a UH West Oʻahu Campus: The BOR approved the 500-acre parcel makai of the H-1 Freeway in Kapolei, referred to as Kapolei Makai, as the location for a permanent UHWO campus. The approval allows the administration to proceed with the acquisition of the land from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), begin the preparation of a Long Range Development Plan for Board of Regents‘ approval, prepare an Environmental Impact Statement, and seek Plan Review use approval from the City Council.
