International search for professor of Native Hawaiian Health

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) is in the process of recruiting a new senior faculty member for the Department of Native Hawaiian Health, and is seeking interested applicants.
 
The opening, for Associate or Full Professor of Native Hawaiian Health is a full-time, tenure-track position that will be filled when the search process has ended. The search is being conducted locally, across the U.S. and internationally. The person selected may also be eligible to be appointed Chair of the department.
 
“We look forward to being able to recruit an outstanding senior faculty for the Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine,” said Dr. Jerris Hedges, JABSOM Dean. “It is expected that the successful candidate for the position will lead the medical school in addressing the health needs of the Native Hawaiian community.”
 
JABSOM’s Department of Native Hawaiian Health is the only medical school department in the U.S. dedicated to the health of a native population.The department educates students from diverse backgrounds to become physicians who will work with medically underserved communities in Hawai‘i and the Pacific region. The department conducts scientific studies, trains researchers and provides clinical teaching and patient care in Hawai‘i. Key areas of research include multi-million dollar studies funded by the U.S. government addressing health disparities, such as why diabetes and cardiovascular disease are more prevalent among Native Hawaiians, and how to best combat those diseases.   
 
A search committee comprised of university and community leaders has been formed to screen applicants and recommend candidates for the faculty position to Dean Hedges. Chaired by Dr. Satoru Izutsu, JABSOM Vice Dean, the search committee includes Dr. Chiyome Fukino, Director of the Hawai‘i State Department of Health; Dr. Michael Chun, Kamehameha Schools President; Amy Agbayani, Director, Student Equity, Excellence & Diversity, University of Hawai'i Mānoa; Marla Berry, Chair, Department of Cell and Microbiology, JABSOM; Maenette Benham, Dean of the School of Hawaiian Knowledge, UH Mānoa; Richard Paglinawan, MSW, Consultant; Dr. Irwin Schatz, Professor of Medicine, JABSOM; Todd Seto, Associate Professor, Medicine, JABSOM; and Jon Matsuoka, Dean & Professor of the School of Social Work at UH Mānoa.
