Approximately 90 students from Waipahu Intermediate School will be introduced to GPS technology by participating in a scavenger hunt at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa on Tuesday, October 27.  Co-sponsored by isisHawaii and GEAR UP Waipahu, the project is spearheaded by Women in Technology’s GeoTech for Hawaii Schools program, a statewide initiative to integrate the use of geospatial technology into local K-12 schools.

GeoTech for Hawaii Schools encourages hands-on learning and real-world application of the latest Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote Sensing technologies.

Students will be split into three groups of 30 and rotate between the scavenger hunt and presentations by UH Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) and Information and Computer Sciences (ICS). SOEST and ICS presentations will showcase the use of GIS, GPS and RS technologies within these areas of study.

Thanks to an unprecedented partnership agreement between ESRI, the world’s leading GIS software developer, Women in Technology and the state Department of Education, all K-12 students in Hawaii public and private schools now have free access to state-of-the-art, industry standard GIS software.
