The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Center on the Family has developed and will distribute two free, timely publications to the community as it faces an unprecedented economic crisis.

"Managing Job Loss and Financial Stress" is a personal and family guide that provides concrete recommendations to minimize the negative impacts of financial strain. The guide also provides a budget-planning tool, as well as a comprehensive list of available community resources.

"Raising Resilient Children During Tough Economic Times," a companion guide, highlights how the economic distress of parents can affect their children. It also outlines five strategies to help build resilience in youth, and includes a list of references and resources for parents and teachers.

"Because we recognize the anxiety and difficulties that many are facing because of job loss and impending work furloughs, we wanted to offer strategies that could be used to survive economic difficulties," said Dr. Sylvia Yuen, director of the UH Mānoa Center on the Family. "We especially wanted people to know that unemployment has an impact on more than the individual, and that the family can withstand and emerge stronger during periods of financial stress."

Added Ann Tom, Center of the Family project manager, "It‘s a good idea to share with children what is happening to the family financially, and what‘s expected of them at a level they can understand. Raising Resilient Children explains what parents can do and say to children at three stages of development: early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence."
