The UH Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law is proud to announce that Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., has awarded Professor Randall Roth its prestigious Gandhi, King, Ikeda Award for his pursuit of social justice through non-violent means. He received the award on Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the 10th Anniversary of "Victory Over Violence," an activity of the International Committee of Artists for Peace.

Dr. Lawrence Carter, Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel at Morehouse, presented the award to Roth, who received a standing ovation from an audience of nearly 1,000 people. The GKI award was created by Morehouse College to celebrate the lives and work of three individuals from three different cultures and countries whose common path of profound dedication to peace is recognized internationally. The award presentation emphasized Roth's writings that call for transparency and accountability in government and charities. "This award means a great deal to me because I have long admired Morehouse College for its emphasis on producing servant leaders," said Roth.

Roth has been a faculty member of the UH Law School since 1983, teaching Professional Responsibility, Trusts & Estates, Federal Income Taxation, Nonprofit Organizations, and Estate Planning. Dean Avi Soifer praised Roth‘s leadership "on multiple fronts," and added, "Professor Roth is exemplary in terms of his independent-minded teaching, writing, and service not only to the Law School but throughout our entire community."

In 2006, Roth and senior federal district court judge Samuel King Jr. published "BROKEN TRUST: GREED MISMANAGEMENT & POLITICAL MANIPULATION AT AMERICA'S LARGEST CHARITABLE TRUST" (University of Hawai'i Press), which received three awards from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association, including "Book of the Year" in 2007.
