Public Reading and Talk by Peter Cole
University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaPeter Cole, a translator, poet, and MacArthur Foundation Fellow based in Jerusalem, will give a free public talk on Thursday, January 22, at the Korean Studies Center on the UHM campus. A reception at 4:30 p.m. will be followed by the reading at 5.
By translating contemporary Hebrew and Arabic literature into English and making the translations widely available, Cole encourages peoples in the Middle East to better understand each other‘s lives. By sharing stories, the communities and nations make greater tolerance,compassion, and peace more possible.
Cole has been a visiting fellow at Yale University‘s Whitney Center for the Humanities and other universities. In addition to a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, he has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has also received a Modern Language Association Translation Award (1998), and a PEN-America Award for Poetry in Translation (2004).
