UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program Offers Free Summer EventsUniversity of Hawaiʻi
This Saturday from 6-9 p.m. the UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program will invite the public to explore Hanauma Bay‘s unique marine life with marine education specialists.
In the first of a series of summer evening programs to celebrate the 2008 International Year of the Reef, marine education specialists will be on hand to offer special ten minute presentations throughout the evening focusing on nocturnal (nighttime) reef life. Craft activities for the keiki (children) will be held in the Hanauma Bay Visitor Center, and marine education specialists will be available at information stations on the beach to share their knowledge and provide assistance.
The events, titled Lei Koʻa — Exploring the Reefs that Surround our Islands, are offered free of charge and will provide both residents and visitors alike with a rare glimpse of the marine life that emerges from their hiding places only at night. The summer evening programs will take place on the fourth Saturday of each month from 6-9 p.m. from June to September. Other upcoming events include:
Saturday, July 26: Hawaiian Ocean Traditions where specialists will discuss Hawaiʻi‘s long-standing connection to the sea.
Saturday, August 23: Exploring Ocean through Art where local artists will exhibit their art and share their inspiration.
Saturday, September 27: Marine Protected Species of Hawaiʻi where experts will discuss protected species and ongoing conservation efforts.
All events will offer crafts and activities for the keiki in the Hanauma Bay Visitor Center.
