Beginning in Fall 2008, UH West Oʻahu will offer its Political Science Concentration via the Internet as part of the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences degree curriculum. The online degree represents the university‘s commitment to providing students with even greater access to quality undergraduate programs.

The Political Science Concentration places government and policy analysis in the context of both the global situation and the personal life experience of the student. The goal of the program is to prepare students for responsible participation in public and professional life.

"Political Science with its dual concern with scholarship and practical action, has a particularly important role to play in service learning, public service and fostering workforce skills by empowering students with a deeper and broader understanding of the human condition," says UH West Oʻahu Political Science Professor Dr. Louis Herman.

The concentration is offered on campus and will be available through UH West Oʻahu‘s distance learning option in partnership with University and Education Centers. Through these centers, UH West Oʻahu offers bachelor‘s degrees and certificate programs to neighbor island residents via distance-delivered classes.

"Offering the concentration online will make an education available to students on the neighbor islands or rural Oʻahu who would not otherwise have access to a Bachelor‘s degree," says UH West Oʻahu Political Science Assistant Professor Dr. Monique Mironesco. "We are excited to be able to provide political education to students all over the state."

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with the Political Science Concentration will be required to take an interdisciplinary course schedule including philosophy, statistics, humanities and general social science in addition to a diverse selection of political science classes. The program prepares students for careers in business, local and national government, international relations, non-profit and non-governmental service organizations, journalism, law, public administration, social work and teaching.

UH West Oʻahu is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2008 semester. For more information about the political science concentration, contact Dr. Mironesco at 454-4705 or mironesc@hawaii.edu. Dr. Herman is also available for inquiries at 454-4722 or louisher@hawaii.edu.
