HONOLULU — In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), the founding college of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, will commemorate the college‘s heritage and recognize the "shining stars" of the present and future at its Centennial Homecoming and Awards Celebration at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom.

"I am very pleased and excited about our centennial banquet themed, ʻHonoring Our Past, Securing Our Future‘" said CTAHR Dean and Director Andrew Hashimoto. "We will be honoring friends, faculty, staff and students of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources who have already made significant contributions to education and the state, and those who have shown promise to do so in the future."

The 2007 recipients are:

2007 Outstanding Alumnus: Nan-Yao Su, professor of entomology at the University of Florida and inventor of the successful Sentricon™ Colony Elimination System for control of subterranean termites.

Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award: Dean Okimoto, president of the Hawaiʻi Farm Bureau Federation, owner of Nalo Farms, and long-time supporter of CTAHR, for his community engagement and collaboration with local agencies and businesses.

Dean‘s Award for Outstanding Civil Service: Milton Yamasaki, Mealani Research Station (Hawaiʻi County)

Dean‘s Award for Outstanding Service by an Administrative, Professional and Technical Employee: Trent Hata, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences

Excellence in Research Award: PingSun Leung, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering

Outstanding Extension Specialist in a Statewide Program: Mike Kawate, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences

Outstanding Extension Agents in Agriculture or Natural Resources Management: Alton Arakaki, Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, and Robin Shimabuku, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences

Outstanding Extension Agent in Nutrition or Human Resources: Pamela Kutara, Family and Consumer Sciences

The Alvin T. and Charlotte C. Nakamura Hōkū Award: Carl Evensen, Natural Resources and Environmental Management

Ka Pouhana (Mentor) Award: John Yanagida, Natural Resources and Environmental Management

National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Teaching Award of Merit: Loriena Yancura, Family and Consumer Sciences

Student award winners and participants in CTAHR‘s Student Research Symposium taking place on April 5-6, 2007, will also be recognized.
