UH Manoa groups show their 'heart' by volunteer community activities

From picking up trash to helping senior citizens and the disabled, Mānoa campus employees and students are volunteering in more than three dozen activities to celebrate Valentine‘s Day next week.

University of Hawaii at Mānoa is sponsoring the first-ever "Heart to Heart Day" to show gratitude to the community in which the campus has thrived for the past century.

"These activities express our appreciation for the tremendous support that our community has given to UH," says Interim Chancellor Denise Eby Konan. "Valentine's Day was chosen for this celebration because of its association with caring."

Chancellor Konan and her staff will join with several vice chancellors‘ offices in picking up trash for several blocks around the campus, starting with a rally at 8 a.m. on the lawn in front of Hawai‘i Hall. They‘ll also stencil storm drains in upper Mānoa Valley.

Other UH Mānoa groups are staging similar cleanups at Honolulu Zoo and Magic Island, collecting donations for the Hawaii Food Bank, sponsoring activities at the Palolo Chinese Home and Ronald McDonald House, and helping at the Kaka‘ako Transitional Shelter.
