Kapiolani Community College announces students selected for 2006-2007 academic year exchange programs in Japan

HONOLULU — The Honda International Center at Kapiʻolani Community College has announced the students selected to participate in exchange programs with Japanese universities for the 2006-2007 academic year. Designed for University of Hawaiʻi students who wish to improve their language speaking and writing skills and learn more about Japanese culture and history, the center offers exchange programs with Kansai University and Osaka Gakuin University in Osaka and Aichi University in Toyohashi.

Robert Manshardt of Kapiʻolani Community College has been selected for the exchange program with Kansai University. Manshardt‘s educational goal is to master the Japanese language and culture.

Matthew Fujita of Kapiʻolani Community College and Jonathan Oshiro of Windward Community College were selected for the exchange program with Aichi University. Fujita‘s educational goal is to master the Japanese language and culture, and Oshiro is interested in studying linguistics and Japanese.

Sarah Baker of Leeward Community College and Matthew May of Kapiʻolani Community College were selected for the exchange program with Osaka Gakuin University, which is open to UH community college students only. Baker aspires to master Japanese and use the language skills in her fashion career. May plans to obtain a master‘s degree in Asian studies.

Up to two students per university are selected each academic year to participate in these three exchange programs. Full-time graduate and undergraduate students from all 10 campuses of the UH system are eligible to apply, except for the Osaka Gakuin University exchange program, which is open only to community college students. Students selected pay regular tuition to their home institutions and are accepted as exchange students for one year on a tuition-exempt status at the host institutions in Japan.
