HONOLULU — Sharon Miyashiro, a specialist in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at UH Manoa, was awarded the 2006 Robert W. Clopton Award for outstanding community service. The Clopton award recognizes a Manoa faculty member who has played a socially significant role by applying intellectual leadership and academic expertise to the improvement of the community.

Since being appointed faculty specialist in 2001, Miyashiro has undertaken a variety of public issues that have resulted in positive changes for the community. Her projects include developing and influencing policies and legislation and working with members of the community on issues that directly impact their neighborhoods.

Among Miyashiro‘s efforts for the university include helping organize policies for the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum; coordinating a partnership between the community and university to develop a 2050 Sustainability Plan; facilitating concerns about custody and divorce cases in family court; and assisting in developing a plan for the emerging Sheridan/Ala Moana community.

Miyashiro also volunteers her time as a mediator for a number of conflict situations for the Mediation Center of the Pacific.

Miyashiro will be recognized for her contributions to the university along with other UH award winners at a system-wide ceremony in the fall.
