PEARL CITY, Oʻahu — The community is invited to the Leeward Community College (LCC) campus to learn about the Philippines through music, dance, food, lectures and exhibits during the weeklong International Education Festival, March 20-24. In its thirteenth year, the LCC International Education Festival celebrates the Philippines and Filipino migration to Hawaiʻi in honor of the Hawaiʻi Filipino Centennial Celebration.

Special lectures and panel discussions about the Philippines, how it relates to the Asia Pacific region, and Filipino life in Hawaiʻi are scheduled for Monday, March 20, and Tuesday, March 21. Gov. Linda Lingle, the honorary chair of the Filipino Centennial Celebration Commission, will present the keynote speech, a reflection on her recent trip to the Philippines, on Monday, March 20, at 11 a.m.

Throughout the week, an interactive, multimedia historical exhibit produced by LCC Philippines Studies students will be on display in the library highlighting the migration of Filipinos in the United States, and a special photo exhibit, "Sulyap" by photographer Tim Llena, will be displayed in the foyer of the Administration Building, offering a glimpse of contemporary Filipino life in Hawaiʻi..

The festival will be in full swing on Wednesday, March 22, with "Pista sa Leeward," a full day of entertainment and performances featuring American Idol finalist Jordan Segundo, LCC‘s Kanikapila Singers, pianist and banduria player Chris Cerna, renowned sax player Fani Tedios, and kundiman vocalist Donnabelle Pascual. The Pedoy Escrima School will also render a demonstration of Filipino traditional martial arts, and Elias Beniga, chair of the Filipino Centennial Celebration Commission, will address the crowd.

The LCC celebration is made possible with funding support from the Filipino Centennial Celebration Commission, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, UH Diversity Funds, and Women‘s Campus Club.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact LCC International Education Committee co-chairs Raymund Liongson, 455-0224, or Pat Neils, 455-0357.
