Frequently Asked Questions on the Elimination of Summer Commencement Ceremonies at UH Manoa
Why was summer commencement eliminated?
Summer commencement was eliminated due to the small turnout in terms of graduates and guests, as well as concerns about the rising costs of producing the ceremony.
How many students normally participated in the summer commencement ceremony?
Approximately 350 students (200 undergraduates and 150 graduate) would participate in the summer commencement ceremony each year.
Conversely, 2300 students (1500 undergraduates and 800 graduate) participate in the spring ceremonies, and 1200 students (800 undergraduates and 400 graduate)
participate in the fall ceremonies.
If I am graduating in the summer, when can I participate (walk) in commencement?
Summer graduates are invited to participate in the preceding spring commencement exercises or the following fall commencement exercises. For example, if you are
eligible to graduate in summer 2008, you may "walk" in the spring (May) 2008 ceremony or the fall (December) 2008 ceremony.
If I am a summer graduate, will my name be listed in the commencement program?
Yes, provided that you file your application for degree by the spring or fall deadline:
- Summer graduates planning to participate in the 97th Annual Commencement Exercises (May graduation) must file the Application for Degree by Friday, January 25, 2008.
- Summer graduates planning to participate in the Fall 2008 Commencement Exercises (December graduation) must file the Application for Degree by Friday, May 30, 2008.
If I am a summer graduate, will my name be called as I cross the stage?
Yes, your name will be called. When you purchase your cap/gown from the bookstore, please also pick up the 3x5 index card. This card will be used by the name reader to call your
name as you cross the stage.
If I walk in the spring ceremony, will I get my diploma early, and if I walk in the fall ceremony, will I get my diploma late?
No, you will not receive your diploma early or late. In the graduation ceremony, a student is presented a diploma cover. Upon the successful completion of all of your degree
requirements, and certification from your respective college, your diploma will become available. Diplomas are normally ready approximately 10 weeks after the date of
commencement. For summer graduates, your diplomas will be ready 10 weeks after the last day of the second summer session upon certification from your respective college that
all degree requirements have been met.
If you should have additional questions, please see your academic advisor. You may also contact the commencement coordinator at 956-6145.
