Assessment in a Learning Organization

A major shift in the focus of educational effectiveness has occurred in academia. The current framework for articulating educational attainment centers not on input-but on output, not on teaching-but on learning. The educational institution is now viewed as a learning organization committed to the assessment of student learning outcomes to demonstrate their academic successes. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior Commission accredits institutions based on the "culture of evidence" of student performance and achievement of educational objectives. Nationally, there is a movement to develop learning assessment policies and plans for educational institutions, departments, and programs, and to promote the creation of assessment committees and administrative positions. It is in this context that this website is developed.

According to the Committee on Academic Policy and Planning Resolution on Assessment, the Mānoa Faculty Senate "supports an assessment process for all departments and programs, in order to revitalize the spirit and practice in higher education of paying substantial attention to the learning achievement of its students." The purpose of this site is to provide information on department and college activities, to provide institutional studies and data, to showcase best practices and provide resource materials and contacts to help in the implement of assessment plans, and to keep everyone apprised of recent assessment efforts and events.
